About

Classification: Diploma
Short Reference: DKAR 1:135
Database ID: 100
Editions: DKAR 1:135, pp. 185-186

Integrity: Complete
Authenticity: Authentic

Dating Information: It is dated as being between 1 June 781 & 31 October 781.

Dating Notes: The diploma is not dated, and no reference to Charlemagne's year of rule in Italy is present (the "intitulatio" just saying "Carolus gratia Dei rex Francorum et Langobardorum et patricius Romanorum"). Mühlbacher puts the release of this document at the time when Charles, during his third descent into Italy, returning from Rome, was in Pavia and Milan (1 June 781 - October 781). The same formulary used is close to the one of the diploma granted in Pavia, on 8 June 781, to the bishop of Reggio Emilia.
